Of pricing, supermarkets and reaching the parts others can’t.

A Twitter conversation today about,  amongst other things,  the role of supermarkets in the UK wine trade prompted me to think a bit more about our role in the supply chain between producer and consumer.  Its my view that we should try and engage people more in a conversation about wine in general and specific wines in particular. I am sitting here without the internet which has inconveniently gone down with a week to go before Christmas!  We are promised an engineer tomorrow so fingers crossed that we can be firing on all cylinders before too long.  Meanwhile this will be uploaded when I get home.  Furthermore, this one is from memory as I am nursing the remains of a cold and my smell circuitry has also gone down – to be repaired I don’t know when.

Planning a wine list #2 – the Country/Gastropub

One might assume that if someone is planning to open a pub that he might have thought about the wine list along with the style of food he (or she!) is going to offer. In my experience, this is very far from the case. We deal with a lot of premises that would fall into this category and many of them offer a list barely different from the kind you might find anywhere – a box ticking exercise. (more…)
